Omega-3 and Omega-6 are the families of essential fatty acids, and of the two, the latter is contained in the Western diet in sufficient quantities as to not require supplementation, or any special dietary arrangements. In fact, there is too much Omega-6 fatty acids in our diet, and it is less, not more, that is needed. One of the problems is that these fatty acids are available in such popular oils as sunflower oil, corn oil and evening primrose oil, and also in wheat germ and soya.
Many of the Omega-6 type components are inflammatory in nature, and are believed to be behind the increase in inflammatory conditions in the American population. The balance of Omega-6 to Omega-3 essential fatty acids is as high as 25-1, and should be closer to 4-1. We should therefore be eating more foods that contain Omega-3, and the major dietary sources of alpha linolenic acid include linseed and its oil, Canola (rapeseed oil), grains, leafy green vegetables, walnuts and mustard seeds.
Since they are not generally common components of the diet of most westerners, an Omega-3 supplement is likely advisable, particularly for women close to the end of their pregnancy when essential fatty acids are being used for brain and nerve cell development. You must, however, take the advice of your doctor or pediatrician before taking any supplements of any kind.
Omega-3 fish oil is the most readily available form of DHA which the body needs in larger quantities in western diets. Look for omega-3 in 1000 milligram softgel forms at your local or internet health food store. Remember to always purchase name brand Omega-3 that is molecularly distilled to ensure it is free from toxins and heavy metals so to be safe for daily consumption.
